# Directions:

01 - Mash black beans in a large bowl using fork or potato masher until mostly smooth, leaving some chunks for texture.
02 - Add red onion, garlic, breadcrumbs, oats, egg, cumin, smoked paprika, chili powder, salt, pepper, and cilantro. Mix until thoroughly combined.
03 - Divide mixture into 4 equal portions and shape into burger patties, about 1/2 inch thick.
04 - Heat olive oil in non-stick skillet over medium heat. Cook patties 4-5 minutes per side until golden brown and heated through. Add cheese slices during final minute, cover to melt.
05 - Lightly toast burger buns until golden.
06 - Spread mayonnaise and ketchup on toasted buns. Layer lettuce, black bean patty with cheese, tomato, avocado, red onion, and pickles. Top with remaining bun.

# Expert Tips:

01 -
  • These burgers actually hold together on the grill instead of crumbling into disappointment
  • The smoked paprika and cumin create this incredible depth that makes you forget you're eating beans
  • You can prep everything ahead and keep the mixture in the fridge for up to two days
02 -
  • If your mixture feels too wet, add another tablespoon of breadcrumbs or oats until it holds its shape
  • Chilling the patties for 30 minutes before cooking prevents them from falling apart on the grill
  • Don't press down on them while cooking, you'll squeeze out all the moisture that keeps them juicy
03 -
  • Use a cast iron skillet if you have one, it creates the most beautiful crust
  • Let the patties rest for a couple minutes after cooking so they set up nicely
